A site inspection carried out by an ISA Certified Arborist on a day and time to suit you,to determine individual site requirements ie Tree risk hazard evaluation, general tree health evaluation, diagnosis of any pests or disease, plant, insect or soil samples taken where necessary followed by a proposal of recommendations sent by post or email.

Common pests and diseases possible to treat include:

  • Cypress aphid/mite/spider mites (often associated with browning cypress hedges)
  • Horse Chestnut Leaf Miner (HCLM)
  • Apple and Pear Scab
  • Anthracnose of Willow and London Plane
  • Phytophthora (including ramorum and cinnamomi)
  • Canker/Bleeding Canker ( including Pseudomonas syringae)
  • Oak Processionary Moth (OPM)
  • Honey Fungus (Armillaria)
  • Box Blight
  • Fire Blight
  • Powdery Mildew

Air Spading and Soil Management

A potential 80% of problems associated with trees are soil related. A foliar pest or disease may be a symptom of a below ground problem; The Ph range of the soil may be wrong or has altered over time,(Ph directly effects the availability of nutrients in the soil to the tree) the soil may have become compacted over time, either as a result of rainfall or traffic,(pedestrian and vehicle).

Ultimately tree roots need air as well as water which is why most of the beneficial fibrous roots are in the upper 8-10 inches of soil, even for the largest of trees.Soil levels too, if altered can have devastating consequences on tree health, even 1 or 2 inches of extra surface soil may suffocate roots.

Nutrient levels may also have become depleted, urban trees are generally kept in sanitized environments,  the process of natural nutrient recycling from Autumn leaf fall is interrupted when leaves are cleared. Nitrogen is the one element all plants and trees need most and yet is leached most readily from the soil. The reduced access to nutrient availability predisposes the tree to pests and disease and unless the downward cycle is broken may lead to tree death.

The Solution?

The solution is to have the soil assessed for Ph and nutrient quality, soil levels around the root collar checked and signs of compaction examined. At the end of this process an informed recommendation can be made for either fertilization, Ph adjustment, root collar excavation, soil decompaction with an air spade/soil pick or a combination to improve overall soil quality and ultimately tree health.
